Chemistry Blog 2

Element Z was recently discovered and has three different isotopes. Isotope 1 has a mass of 45 daltons and is found in nature 33% of the time. Isotope 2 has a mass of 46 daltons and is found in nature 57% of the time, and Isotope 3 is 48 daltons and is found in nature 10% of the time. What is the average atomic mass of element Z?

  4. The average atomic mass of an element is the weighted average of the atomic masses of its naturally occurring isotopes. It depends on the mass and the relative abundance of the different isotopes.

    Isotope #1- 33% x 45amu = 14.85amu
    Isotope #2- 57% x 46amu = 26.22amu
    Isotope #3- 10% x 48amu = 4.8amu

    14.85+26.22+4.8 = 45.87

    Average atomic mass =45.87 daltons
